After much consideration and conversation, the Board of Education has made the difficult decision to close Franklin Elementary School at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.
Closing the building has been found by an audit from the state to be the most fiscally responsible decision for the district, as it is not financially sound to continue to operate a school of this size. Consolidating the three elementary schools to two will also allow for the better allocation of educational resources, providing all students equal access to special services and the expansion of innovative educational opportunities, such as gifted and STEAM initiatives.
Students who currently attend Franklin Township Elementary will be transferred to Wooster Township Elementary beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Intra-district open enrollment will be handled according to current policy.
No current Franklin Township Elementary employee’s job will be lost as a result of the building’s closure. Further details regarding district restructuring will be finalized in subsequent months.
The next steps regarding the district’s full facilities plan will be shared with the community as they are finalized. We will do our best to make this transition as easy as possible on our students, staff and families. As a school district, we will continue to prioritize class sizes while providing opportunities for authentic learning.
